UNGA75 Biodiversity Summit: Urgent Action on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development
The Summit on Biodiversity, “Urgent Action on Biodiversity for Sustainable Development", will provide a unique opportunity to demonstrate ambition to accelerate action on biodiversity for sustainable development, and thereby give momentum to the development and eventual adoption of an effective post-2020 global biodiversity framework at the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP 15).
How is this relevant to nutrition? New data from the World Wide Fund for Nature's (WWF) recently-released Living Planet Report 2020 revealed that more than two-thirds of the world's biodiversity has been lost over the past 50 years, due in large part to the way we currently produce food. The 2020 Global Nutrition Report: Action on equity to end malnutrition argued that current agriculture practices limit the production of diverse crops and called on governments, business and civil society to tackle the injustices in food systems for an end to malnutrition in all its forms.
