Commitment

Improve the livelihoods of poultry farmers and farm business actors by improving capacity for household consumption, income generation, market access, increased awareness of poultry production and the value of consumption.

Private sector food business / United States of America

October 2018 — December 2030

Description

Cargill will fulfill this commitment with Hatching Hope co-founder Heifer International, and other implementing partners. Hatching Hope uses a market-systems approach to improve nutrition and economic livelihoods by supporting small and medium-sized poultry farms to improve production, supporting markets to meet the needs of small- and medium-scale poultry farmers and poultry product customers, and addressing barriers to poultry consumption. The specific activities will vary depending on the specific needs of the community in which it operates and on the implementing partner, but will typically follow one of five models: (1) The market-led model emphasizes connections throughout the market system and is led by people and entities within the supply chain, (2) the technical advisory model is primarily consultative, with consultants providing advice to farmers, markets, or consumers, (3) the income diversification model supports non-poultry farmers in incorporating poultry into their operations as an additional source of income and nutrition, (4) the individually led model consists of one-time activities using the Hatching Hope toolkit, and (5) the holistic model is the most comprehensive, with activities supporting farmers, markets, and consumers in the same community. To reach the 100 million people named in the goal through the implementation of these models, we will: (1) Seek and secure additional partners to implement Hatching Hope in additional geographies, (2) Provide in-kind technical advisory services to small- and medium-scale poultry farmers and market-actors that serve them, (3) Build partnerships with Cargill customers where they can serve and support the growth of small- and medium-scale poultry farmers, and (4) Build broad public information oureach related to consumption.
