Title
National food strategy
Description
Mexico has made significant progress in reducing child malnutrition and is implementing innovative programmes to halt the rise in levels of excess weight and obesity among children, adolescents and adults. However, the number of overweight and obese people continues to grow, and the reduction in malnutrition levels has stalled, largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mexico is therefore developing a National Strategy for Healthy, Fair and Sustainable Food, with a strategic approach to nutrition based around four general areas: 1) the promotion of healthy, fair and sustainable food; 2) the structuring of agri-food chains; 3) healthy and sustainable environments; and 4) food system governance. The objectives of the strategy are to reduce the prevalence of 1) chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years of age (from 13.9% in 2020 to 13.6% in 2024); 2) overweight and obese people in Mexico (by 8.4% for children under 5 years of age, 38.2% for school-age children, 43.8% for adolescents and 72.1% for adults from 2020 to 2024); and 3) diagnoses of pre-diabetes in adults (from 10.6% in 2020 to 10.3% in 2024).
