Description
In a year focused on food systems transformation, ending hunger remains a core priority. Hunger is on the rise, with conflict now the primary driver worldwide, and undernutrition contributing to nearly half of all deaths in children under-5 years of age.
Addressing hunger and malnutrition has been central to Ireland’s foreign policy and development cooperation for many decades.
Through working with a wide range of partners, Ireland will support innovative programming approaches for the prevention and treatment of wasting. This will include working with NGO’s, think tanks, sector experts, other member states, key donor agencies and other stakeholders. A template for this approach is the development of Community Managed Acute Malnutrition (CMAM), which was piloted by Concern Worldwide and funded in the initial stages by Irish Aid.
Through the Nutrition Policy Budget, Ireland will develop partnerships that bring forward both existing and innovative approaches to tackling wasting.

At N4G, Ireland pledged support for innovative programming approaches for the prevention and treatment of wasting, with a particular focus on tackling wasting for children from 0 to 6 months of age. Zero hunger is the ultimate test of an effective sustainable food system. Wasting is the most visible form of malnutrition and carries the highest risk of death. Some 45 million children under 5 years of age currently suffer from wasting. This commitment positioned Ireland to take a leadership role on the issue of wasting globally, backed up by programming targetted at small and nutritionally at-risk infants and children. Ireland's leadership was demonstrated with an additional commitment made in November 2022, of US$50 million over three years.
