Grameen Euglena which is a joint venture company in Bangladesh between Euglena Co., Ltd and Grameen Agriculture Fundation leading by Prof Muhanmad Yunus, has about 25 agricultural field supervisors

At first, Field supervisors hold farmers meetings Mungbean production area in rural for motivating and guiding the rural farmers & make contract for our mungbean cultivation. 1 field supervisor contact about 300 farmers.

In the farmers meetings, farmers can get knowhow of Mungbean cultivation to increase productivity and quality.

In rural villages of Bangladesh, cash payment is the general method for agricultural product dealing. But, Grameen Euglena's (GE) provide the banking payment for rural farmers to avoid the security risk of carrying cash by employee of GE.

Also GE purchases products directly from farmers without middleman with better price compering with local market.

By the above systematic operation, GE collaborate with farmers and motivate to increase the engaging number of farmers.

After purchasing the Mungbean, GE sort and process in own factory. The bigger size of products is for export because it is suitable for the raw material of Moyashi Sprout in Japan, and the smaller size is for local consume because rural consumers likes smaller size taste for Dal curry. This dal will be provided for food supply to Rohingya refugee people through WFP.

By involving many farmers and increasing their income, refugee people can get much food supply from this business sustainably.

Description

Euglena Co (below as EUG) has aimed to create job opportunity and increase income for Bangladeshi poor farmers though social business exporting 50% of purchased Mungbean from Bangladesh to Japan and supplying the rest 50% to local consumer with reasonable price.

In Japan, Mungbean which is the raw material of 'Moyashi Sprout' is totally depended on importing and also its almost part is depending on 1 country, China. The import price of Mungbean has also increased 3 times compared with 15 years ago. On the other hand, in Bangladesh, it has been a challenge for many years that 48 % of population works related with Agriculture and 70 % of them lives in rural area facing poverty.

EUG aims to solve the challenges in both countries. EUG contributes farmers by providing a technology how to produce better quality of Mungbean, and by making a profit through purchasing the harvested product directly with better price than local market. The purchased quality products are exported to Japan and it contributes Japanese market as a sustainable supply source of Mungbean.

In addition, since 2019, EUG has started cooperation activity with World Food Programme (WFP). By supplying the farmers' Mungbean to WFP shop operated by WFP in Rohingya Refugee camp, it also contributes solving a food shortages and a malnutrition problems which Refugees faced.

EUG will take the lead in sustaining and expanding a business as follows to solve the social problems which Bangladeshi smallholder farmers and Rohingya refugees face.

EUG plans to increase the number of contract farmers from 2,000 in 2020 to 7,000 in 2022, which will increase the food supply to Rohingya refugees from 1 million in 2020 to 5 million in 2022.

EGG will implements technical guidance and capital investment for sorting and processing also to increase productivity and reduce costs of local agricultural production. It will promote the independence of local farmers and aim for long-term continuation.

Many of our operations are restricted under the influence of Covid-19. But, by collaborating with Japanese Government agencies, UN agencies and local stakeholders and by utilizing our private sector's knowhow and experience, EUG shall achieve to make our activity universal as ideal role model of public-private partnership.
