Commitment

Reduce the prevalence of stunting in children under the age of five from 19% to 14% by 2030

Government / Honduras

March 2022 — December 2030

Description

The Nutrition Action Plan proposes broad coverage of the entire Honduran population, leaving no one behind, through the inclusion and organisation of different programmes and the participation of multiple bodies (government, UN, grassroots organisations, private companies, universities and donors) and industries (health, education, agriculture, planning, social protection and others) at multiple levels (national, regional and local). The Plan is set to address the country's situation with regard to malnutrition across four broad areas: 1) a comprehensive approach to initiatives; 2) the organisation of actions across various sectors at national, regional and local levels; 3) encouragement of the general public’s participation; and 4) the mobilisation of resources and efforts to promote sustainable and inclusive development for Hondurans. The implementation of this Plan requires the establishment of a government body that will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Plan. This will include representation from the Ministry of Health and a national nutrition committee from the Comité Técnico Interinstitucional de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional (Inter-Institutional Technical Committee on Food and Nutrition Security).

The Plan initiatives and programme goals are organised into five main blocks: 1) institutional and decentralised management for nutrition; 2) special care for infants under 2 years of age, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and breastfeeding babies; 3) nutritional surveillance; 4) food safety; and 5) non-communicable diseases. The proposed indicators for the fulfilment of the goals and objectives are measurable in national studies: malnourishment, incidence of chronic malnutrition in children under 5 years of age, prevalence of overweight and obese women aged 15–49 years, incidence of total anaemia in children aged 6–59 months and incidence of anaemia in women aged 15–49 years.

The objective of the Nutrition Action Plan, unveiled as part of the Política y Estrategia Nacional de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional (National Food and Nutrition Security Policy and Strategy; PyENSAN) 2030, is to end all forms of malnutrition and address lifelong nutritional needs. The plan focuses on undernourishment, chronic malnutrition, growth retardation, wasting, underweight and overweight among children under the age of 5 years, and anaemia in women and children, among other micronutrient deficiencies. It also focuses on halting the upward trend of excessive weight and obesity and reducing the burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases across all age groups.
