At least three governments mandate or establish new food fortification programmes or significantly strengthen existing programmes
Description
Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)’s technical assistance to country governments will include support in tailoring food fortification standards to address the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in the target population, providing relevant information to key decision-makers, supporting the creation of strong national food fortification mandates and assisting government officials to design and carry out market and factory surveillance to ensure quality. GAIN’s technical assistance to civil society will include alliance building among key stakeholders, supporting the creation of a multistakeholder advocacy strategy, helping to produce advocacy collateral for communication with duty bearers and supplying data to inform advocacy efforts.
Overarching commitment (for commitments submitted pre-2025)
Title
Better nutrition through fortification
Description
Supported by the Gates Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, GAIN will work with national governments to increase access to fortified foods across six geographies through 2022–2025: Bangladesh, Benin, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Uganda. Through our programming, technical assistance will be provided to governments, food producers and civil society. Also, a global alliance for food fortification will be strengthened by improving coordination and communication across key development partner organisations through the Global Fortification Technical Advisory Group, and GAIN will support the establishment of food fortification digital monitoring tools in at least three countries. Altogether, this will ensure that at least 1.2 billion people will have access to fortified staple foods and that at least three governments will establish new food fortification mandates or significantly strengthen existing programmes by 2025.
