To contribute to prevent denutrition and to slow loss of autonomy of the elderly people in France and Europe, through available and accessible nutritional support to the elderly people
Description
Nutriset has developed a specific nutritional solution dedicated to the elderly to prevent denutrition and loss of autonomy. This solution is innovative because it can be integrated into food preparation. However, if denutrition is recognised, solutions to address this issue are still weak.
We will work at different levels so more beneficiaries can be reached by:
• Awareness-raising and advocacy for more denutrition recognition, including public institutions and private-sector engagement, contribution to and participation in symposia and conferences and media coverage.
• Commercial development to present the product, its use and its impact to potential clients.
• Industrial upgrades to be able to produce in large quantities.
• Specific trainings of medical staff and kitchen staff on the use and preparation of the product and awareness-raising among beneficiaries’ communities on denutrition and the impact of the product.
• Research and clinical trials to prove the product’s efficiency in collaboration with public hospitals and nursing homes.
Overarching commitment (for commitments submitted pre-2025)
Title
Elderly people versus denutrition
Description
Contrary to popular belief, the nutritional needs of older people are equivalent to or greater than those of younger adults. However, the spontaneous food consumption of the elderly decreases with age due to the physiological, psychosocial and pathological factors from which they may suffer.
This imbalance between high needs and low intake is at the origin of denutrition, which generates weight loss and a state of frailty that could lead to disease.
This silent disease has an impact on health, autonomy and life expectancy. Two million people in France suffer from denutrition, mostly among the elderly.
This commitment aims to raise awareness of undernutrition in the elderly so this issue can be taken into consideration and addressed through an innovative nutritional solution to enrich meals at home or served in residences for the elderly, hospitals, nursing home, etc.
This innovative solution, Appeti’mix™, was developed by Nutriset following the recommendations of both the Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and the National High Authority of Health (HAS). A dose of 80g provides an additional intake of 400kcal/day and 30g/day of protein and covers at least one-third of the recommended daily nutritional requirements of vitamins and minerals essential for the elderly.
Three years of research and immersion in the field with the elderly were necessary to design Appeti’mix. This solution is to be integrated in food preparation (no taste, no odour) and, thus, is consistent with eating habits.
