Commitment

Increase the national budget dedicated to nutrition

Government / Comoros

March 2022 — October 2022

Description

Overarching commitment (for commitments submitted pre-2025)

Title

Financing for nutrition

Description

A round table was organized in 2022 to finance the implementation of the National Multisectoral Food and Nutrition Policy (2018–2025), resulting in increased commitments from partners for nutrition.

This round table is crucial because unobserved efforts, insufficient funding, and a limited number of partners hamper the policy's effective implementation, despite the identification of effective and inexpensive actions that can be rapidly scaled up through a collective and coordinated effort.

It is also needed to address the nutritional situation of children under 5 years of age, which remains worrying, characterized by stunting (30%), wasting (11%), and underweight (16%) (Demographic and Health Surveys [DHS] 2012). At the same time, various forms of malnutrition by excess are appearing in the epidemiological landscape, including a prevalence of 36% for overweight (25% overweight, 12% obesity). Nearly 4 out of 10 women have an abnormal Body Mass Index (BMI). This directly impacts the development of chronic non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure (DHS Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey [EDS-MICS] 2012).

The organisation of a round table seems to be opportune to help the country mobilise the necessary funding. The organisation of the table will:

• Share the Union of Comoros’ vision of nutrition and discuss the priorities of the National Nutrition and Food Policy.

• Involve and mobilise all partners and collect their commitments for the financing of the strategic plan.

• Consolidate partnerships between the government, technical and financial partners, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders.

• Put in place a mechanism for monitoring commitments and financial flows directed towards nutrition.
