Commitment

Reduction in prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale

Government / Bangladesh

July 2025 — December 2030

Description

By 2030, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Ministries of Food, Fisheries and Livestock, Women and Children Affairs, Social Welfare, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Health and Family Welfare/Bangladesh National Nutrition Council, Commerce, Industry, Education, Environment, Forest and Climate Change; civil society organisations; academia; private-sector actors; UN agencies; and development partners, commits to reducing the prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity, as measured by the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), from 30.5% (State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World [SOFI] 2024) to 24.2% and severe food insecurity from 11.4% (SOFI 2024) to 6%.

Progress will be monitored through the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS-FIES) and the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI).

To achieve this goal, a coordinated, multisectoral approach will be led by the Ministry of Agriculture and co-lead by Ministry of Food. These efforts will be aligned with the specific programme as envisaged under the Third Country Investment Plan for Nutrition-Sensitive Food Systems (CIP3) and plan of action of national food and nutrition security policy integrating physical, political, economic and social dimensions of food systems to address the root causes of food insecurity. The initiative will align with other food paradigms, including promoting sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening food supply chains, improving income, enhancing social safety nets and empowering vulnerable groups, especially women, to build resilience against climate and economic shocks.

The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Ministry of Food will implement, coordinate and monitor the progress. An estimated cost of BDT 4,750 million will be mobilised from public funds, development partners and nongovernmental organisations.
