Commitment

Develomenent and Implementation of Kenya Nutrient Profile Model and Front of Pack Nutrition Labelling

Government / Kenya

January 2022 — June 2025

Description

The Kenya Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) shall be used to guide the following:

• Implementation and adoption of front-of-pack nutrition labelling (FOPNL).

• Use of the Kenya NPM requires mandatory nutrition labelling of pre-packaged foods, including:

a) A declaration of nutrient content for energy, protein, available carbohydrates, sodium, total sugars and total fat (including saturated fat).

b) A list of all ingredients in the product, including added sugar.

• Nutrient content should be declared relative to total weight or volume, expressed as “per 100 g” or “per 100 ml” of the food product.

The Kenya NPM can also be applied to the:

• Control of marketing and promotion of unhealthy food and beverages.

• Regulation of the food environments in schools and public institutions.

• Establishment of fiscal policies to limit the consumption of unhealthy foods.

• Development of guidelines for food programmes, including for vulnerable groups, schools and institutions.

The model shall be used to engage stakeholders and build consensus among key government sectors, including the private sector and civil society, on the Kenya NPM and thresholds. It will also be used to evaluate the impact of policies based on the Kenya NPM to provide critical feedback during implementation.
