Commitment

Awareness of the effectiveness of Unconditional Basic Income Grants as a means to reduce poverty and ensure food and nutrition security has increased, and its efficiency in implementing it (compared to conditional grants) is increasingly being noticed

Civil society organisation / Namibia

January 2010 — December 2030

Description

The Nutrition and Food Security Alliance of Namibia (NAFSAN) will liaise closely with nongovernmental actors, such as the BIG [Basic Income Grant] Coalition (http://www.bignam.org), and key decision-makers in government, such as the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, towards eventually introducing an unconditional UBI grant, as well as other suitable measures on the way towards it.

Against the background that Namibia is the second-most unequal country and that the monthly expenses for a minimal nutritious diet for a five-person household are at least 3,100 Namibian dollars (https://www.nafsan.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/FNG-Namibia_Report.pdf), having N$2,500 available for five people (5 x 500) would make a huge difference in terms of access to food. A supermarket cashier, for instance, earns N$1,600 per month, and youth unemployment is around 50%. Studies have proven the effectiveness of BIGs to tackle poverty and malnutrition (http://www.bignam.org/BIG_publications.html).

Overarching commitment (for commitments submitted pre-2025)

Title

Access to nutrition for all Namibians

Description

This intervention involves advocating for the entire Namibian population, especially previously disadvantaged and marginalised communities, to be able to access safe, healthy and nutritious food.

Namibia is currently the second-most unequal society in the world (after South Africa), with the majority not being able to afford sufficiently nutritious food for themselves and their families. Social protection is therefore key to ensure healthy nutrition, equality and improved overall socioeconomic development, and Namibia already successfully implemented a pilot for an unconditional UBI grant (http://www.bignam.org), which will be one of the social protection mechanisms for which NAFSAN wants to advocate.
