Commitment

Awareness of the effectiveness of Unconditional Basic Income Grants as a means to reduce poverty and ensure food and nutrition security has increased, and its efficiency in implementing it (compared to conditional grants) is increasingly being noticed

Civil society organisation / Namibia

January 2010 — December 2030

Description

NAFSAN will closely liaise with non-government actors, such as the BIG Coalition (http://www.bignam.org) and key decision makers in government (e.g., the responsible Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare - MGEPESW) towards eventually introducing an unconditional Basic Income Grant, as well as other suitable measures on the way towards it.

Against the background that Namibia is the 2nd most unequal country, and the monthly expenses for a minimal nutritious diet for a 5-ppl household are at least N$ 3,100 (https://www.nafsan.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/FNG-Namibia_Report.pdf) having N$ 2,500 available for five people (5 x 500) would make a huge difference in terms of access to food. A supermarket cashier for instance earns N$ 1,600 per months, and youth unemployment is around 50%... Studies have proven the effectiviveness of the BIG to tackle poverty and malnutrition: http://www.bignam.org/BIG_publications.html

Overarching commitment (for commitments submitted pre-2025)

Title

Access to nutrition for all Namibians

Description

Advocate for the entire Namibian population, especially those previously disadvantaged and marginalised communities to be able to access safe, healthy, and nutritious food.

Namibia is currently the second most unequal society in the world (after South Africa), with the majority not being able to afford sufficiently nutritious food for themselves and their families. Social Protection is therefore key to ensure nutrition, equality and improved overall social-economic development, and Namibia already successfully implemented a pilot for an Universal and Unconditional Basic Income Grant (BIG - http://www.bignam.org), which will be one of the social protection mechanisms that NAFSAN wants to advocate for.
