Description

Key interventions targeting women of childbearing age have been lined up for implementation by the government and partners, including:

• Promotion of a diversified diet, including locally available and affordable nutritious, fortified and biofortified foods.

• Promotion of increased daily energy and protein intake to increase body mass index and reduce the risk of low-birth-weight infants in undernourished populations.

• Promotion of continued and consistent use of iron and folic acid or other micronutrient supplements.

• Integration of family planning /sexual and reproductive health into interventions for women of childbearing age.

• Women's empowerment and training on income-generation skills for women.

• Promotion of preconception and antenatal nutritional care in adolescents.

• Nutrition education and counselling support in schools.

• Promotion of completion of secondary education.

Reduce low birth weight

Description

The government of the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with development partners, commits to reduce the prevalence of low birth weight from 6.3% in 2018 to less than 5.0% by 2026. To reach this target, evidence-based interventions will be implemented and monitored under the National Multisectoral Nutrition Action Plan 2021/22–2025/26 (NMNAP II) framework through the health sector and nutrition-sensitive sectors (education, community development and food security). Overall, TZS 23.1 billion (US$10 million) has been budgeted for implementation of key interventions to fulfil this national commitment by 2026.
