Scaled-up Coverage of Cash Transfer Schemes Targeting Extreme Poor
Description
Poverty is a key driver of malnutrition. This commitment scales up cash transfers to reach households living in extreme poverty, enabling them to access food, health care, and basic services. Targeted transfers are a proven approach to reduce food insecurity and improve nutrition outcomes, especially for women and children. It builds on national social protection programmes and expands support for those who need it most. This commitment aligns with the Government of Sierra Leone’s long-standing social protection agenda and builds on achievements by the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA). Since 2014, NaCSA’s flagship Social Safety Net (SSN) Programme has provided regular cash transfers to more than 190,000 extremely poor households across the country. By scaling up coverage of cash transfers - particularly unconditional or conditional schemes that prioritize nutrition outcomes - this commitment ensures that economic access to food and essential services improves for the most at-risk populations. It also supports implementation of Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan, which calls for stronger social protection systems as a foundation for inclusive, sustainable development.
