Creating an Enabling Environment for Nutrition in Kyrgyzstan
Description
By 2030, the Kyrgyz Republic commits to creating an enabling environment for healthy nutrition to prevent and control micronutrient deficiencies, reduce diet-related diseases, and strengthen food security. To achieve this, the following key measures will be implemented:
-Adoption and implementation of the National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Micronutrient Deficiencies in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2026–2030.
-Allocation of state funding for micronutrient supplementation for pregnant women and adolescent girls aged 15–18 years.
-Expansion of the network of Baby-Friendly Hospitals.
-Promotion and protection of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life and its continuation thereafter.
-Capacity building of primary healthcare workers in counseling and support for breastfeeding at the PHC level and within communities.
-Expansion of primary school students' coverage with hot meals under the school feeding program.
-Introduction of educational programs on healthy nutrition in schools.
-Regulation of unhealthy food and sugar-sweetened beverage marketing, including restrictions on advertising to children.
-Fortification of staple foods (flour, oil, salt) with essential micronutrients.
-Development of a sustainable food supply system (creating effective logistics and ensuring the availability of healthy products at all stages – from production to consumption).

Target | The National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Micronutrient Deficiencies in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2025–2030 will be approved and implemented in 2025. State funding will be allocated for micronutrient supplementation for women (18–49 years) and adolescent girls (15–17 years) by 2029. Expansion of the Baby-Friendly Hospitals initiative by 2030. Increase exclusive breastfeeding to 70% during the first 6 months of a child's life and continue breastfeeding afterward by 2030. Annual training for over 300 healthcare workers at PHC and community levels on breastfeeding counseling and support by 2030. 95% of primary school students will be covered by the school feeding program by 2030. By 2029, nutrition education programs will be introduced in schools. By 2029, a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers on regulating the marketing of foods high in fats, sugar, or salt, and sugary drinks, including tax measures, will be adopted. The sustainable food supply system will increase to 7%, ensuring efficient logistics and access to healthy food at all stages – from production to consumption by 2030. A fortification mechanism for flour, oil, and salt will be developed, along with strengthening the laboratory of the Department of Disease Prevention and State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic to improve the quality control of fortified food products by 2029. | March 2030 |
